The organization also thanks the Senate for voting down a last-minute attempt to raise property taxes on small businesses and manufacturers
MADISON – Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) thanked the Wisconsin State Senate for passing Senate Bill 96 – a bill that would make the tax assessment appeal process easier and fairer – in a bipartisan vote.
WMC also commends the Senate for rejecting a last-minute amendment proposed by Democratic Senators that would have tainted this good, bipartisan bill with a tax hike on Wisconsin’s small-town manufacturers and main street businesses.
This amendment follows a call by Gov. Tony Evers to eliminate the now de-bunked, so-called “dark store loophole.” When actually looking at the facts, it is easy to see there is no “dark store loophole.” The call by Gov. Evers to close the “loophole” and the attempt by Democrats in the Senate to add this amendment is a cloaked attempt at raising taxes on our state’s job creators.
“As WMC has pointed out over and over again, this attempt to close a so-called loophole is actually just a veiled attempt by lobbyists to convince the legislature to raise taxes,” said WMC General Counsel and Director of Tax, Transportation & Legal Affairs Cory Fish. “The facts are clear – this is bad public policy that would make it more expensive for people to work, do business and live in Wisconsin. We commend the Senate for voting down this misguided legislation that would have increased property taxes even more after Wisconsinites have already seen the largest property tax hikes in 10 years.”
