Governor Walker Calls for WMC-Supported State HSA Tax Break

Monday, Governor Scott Walker called the Wisconsin Legislature into special session to cut business taxes, reduce unnecessary regulations, and cut down on costly litigation. As part of that call, Governor Walker asked the Legislature to adopt federal law relating to health savings accounts (HSAs). Under federal law, HSA contributions and withdrawals are tax free, provided the money is used to pay for medical care. Wisconsin currently taxes these contributions and withdrawals. WMC had long argued for Wisconsin to federalize its tax treatment of HSAs. Multiple times, such legislation passed the Wisconsin Legislature, but was vetoed by then-Governor Jim Doyle.
