WMC Commends Introduction of Mining Legislation

MADISON – Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce Wednesday commended the Legislature for acting swiftly to pass comprehensive iron mining reform that protects the environment and fosters high-wage job creation.
On Wednesday, Assembly Majority Leader Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) and Senator Tom Tiffany (R-Hazelhurst) introduced comprehensive iron mining reform aimed at streamlining the approval process for iron mines while protecting the environment.  Governor Scott Walker called for passage of the legislation on Tuesday in his state-of-the-state address.
“This bill represents the most significant job creation opportunity for our state with thousands of construction and mining jobs, all while protecting the environment,” said WMC Vice President of Government Relations Scott Manley.  “We commend Governor Walker, Representative Suder and Senator Tiffany for their leadership on this issue along with all of the lawmakers who supported the reforms last session.”
Manley said iron mining reform is extremely popular with the public. “All of our polling at WMC has found that iron mining reform enjoys overwhelming support with voters,” Manley said.
“We urge the legislature to take swift action on the bill so we can capture this $1.5 billion investment and start the process of creating family-supporting, middle class jobs,” Manley added.
