Director of Tax, Transportation, and Legal Affairs Evan Umpir testified in support of Senate Bill 623 which would create a tax credit for businesses that establish a child care facility for employees’ children or otherwise purchase slots or cover costs of child care for employees’ children. According to WMC’s latest Wisconsin Employer Survey, a vast majority of Wisconsin employers are struggling to hire workers. One barrier for many families preventing a parent from entering or re-entering the workforce is access to affordable child care. Nineteen other states, both Democrat and Republican states, have a similar credit for businesses and another seven states, including Wisconsin, have active proposals creating one. The Senate bill awaits a vote in committee; the identical Assembly version passed out of committee and awaits a vote by the entire Assembly.
