MADISON – Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC) – the combined state chamber and manufacturers’ association – commended the State Assembly and Senate for passing Special Session Senate Bill 1, which contains language providing COVID-19 liability protections for businesses, universities, schools, non-profits and other organizations.
WMC has urged the legislature and Gov. Tony Evers to pass state-level liability protections since it released its Relief & Recovery Agenda early last year.
“Wisconsin employers have taken countless steps and invested unknown sums of money to keep their workers, customers and the public safe,” said WMC General Counsel and Director of Tax, Transportation and Legal Affairs Cory Fish. “The liability protections contained in this bill will ensure businesses can focus on restarting the Wisconsin economy, and not worrying about predatory lawsuits.”
In early December, WMC led a coalition of more than 70 organizations including business groups, chambers of commerce and others asking Gov. Evers and the legislature to approve this type of liability reform legislation.
“Without this legislation, employers and other organizations could face potentially bankruptcy-causing lawsuits even though they did everything right to protect their people,” added Fish. “WMC and our members strongly urge Gov. Evers to sign this bill.”
The Senate passed the bill last week 27-3, and the Assembly approved it on Tuesday 89-0.
